The two responses I got were to turn it on as soon as I hit the mat. If I turn it on then, it won't get the satellites in time enough and won't start timing right away! I guess I need to be clearer with my question. Do you press the on button 1 minute before the start, 5 minutes or 10 minutes to give it enough time to make sure it has the satellites before the race even starts?
I am a newbie when it comes to running a race with the Forerunner 305! Although my race is not until April 26th, I am thinking about it lots, lately. I have a question for those of you who are experienced in this area!
How soon before the gun goes off at the start line, do you turn your Forerunner on to catch the satellites so it's ready to start once you step on the mat?

When you cross the mat! Gives you an accurate time for chip (not gun) time.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as you hit the mat!
ReplyDeleteand when you cross at the finish line, DON'T turn it off while they are taking your photo finish, you want to be upright and smiling for the camera's!!! Not looking down at your garmin...
;)
I always turn my 305 on several minutes - at least 5 - before the start of a race, to get a lock on the satellites. And I make sure to reset it in case I forgot to do so after my last/previous run. And then I press the 'start-stop' button when I cross the start line.
ReplyDeleteThe Garmin is crazy, it is influenced by the clouds, the buildings and other things. For this reason it's better to switch on that "nightmare" 10 minutes before and make some test to check if it works. However when I race, if there are the marks, I don't use it because my eyes go always there to watch my pace. I prefer my old Nike running watch.
ReplyDeletei actually just wear a regular watch..cause I hope the course is the right distance and it's only the time I care about
